Handling just like standard acrylics, Atelier acrylic paints are a professional-grade, highly pigmented, and lightfast paint with one key difference. While these paints offer the same speed and ease-of-use as most premium acrylic paints, they also offer the unique freedom to control drying and extend the paint’s ‘open’ time when needed.
With the ability to keep your paints workable for minutes, or even hours simply by adding water, you can continue to use wet-on-wet techniques for as long as you like. You can even reactivate touch-dry Atelier Acrylic Paints using Atelier’s Unlocking Formula, giving you more creative freedom than ever before, while retaining the fast-drying capabilities of acrylics when you need them.
Atelier Acrylics also mix well with Atelier’s range of quality mediums, gels, varnishes, and more, so you can explore a variety of techniques in your work.
Here are some things you should know to get you started with Atelier Acrylic Paints
What Does the Series Number Mean in Atelier Acrylic Paints?
Paint manufacturers typically group their selection of paints into ‘series’, which represent the cost of the pigments used to create the colours. Typically, the lower the series number, the cheaper the paint will be to buy.
It’s important to note that the series number does not indicate the quality of the paint. For example, Atelier’s Pthalo Blue is a series 1 paint, while Cerulean Blue is a series 6 paint. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the Cerulean Blue paint is of a higher quality, only that the pigments that go into it are more expensive and possibly harder to source.
Atelier Priming and Binding Paint Supplies
For the best results, we recommend priming your canvas prior to painting on it. Preparing your canvas with a high-quality primer such as Atelier Gesso Primer gives your canvas ‘tooth’ which allows for a more stable surface to adhere to. Atelier Gesso Primer also helps make the surface less absorbent, preventing the paint from soaking through, which often leads to undesirable result
Products such as Atelier Binding Medium can also be used to prepare a surface before painting as it allows for excellent paint adhesion while creating a smooth and clear surface to work on.
What is the Difference Between Standard Atelier Gesso and Atelier Liquid Gesso?
They may look similar on the outside, but the key difference between Atelier Gesso and Liquid Gesso is the consistency. While standard Atelier Gesso Primer has a higher grit content which creates a toothy surface for the paint to bind to, Liquid Gesso has a thinner consistency which spreads more easily and dries to a thin and flexible white film. This creates a smoother surface for you to work with.
Atelier Liquid Gesso can be applied straight from the container as it doesn’t require any thinning or dilution before applied.
Atelier Mediums
There are a wide variety of mediums and gels that can be mixed into your paint to achieve a range of techniques and textures. Determining which product you should be using depends on what you’re trying to do.
Here’s an overview of some of Atelier’s most popular mediums and gels:
Paint Drying Retarders
Retarders work to slow down drying time and extend the ‘open’ time of paints. Atelier’s range of drying retarders includes Atelier Unlocking Formula, Slow Medium, Retarder Medium, and Thick Slow Medium.
Paint Thickening Mediums
Mediums that increase the volume of your paints are a popular option for artists wanting to experiment with textures and impasto techniques. For exaggerated structure and textural effects, we recommend Atelier Moulding Paste, Heavy Gel, or Holding Medium.
Paint Thinning Mediums
If you need to reduce paint viscosity for airbrushing, high-detail work, or other flow formula techniques, thinning mediums allow you to thin out your paint for improved brushability. Atelier offers a variety of supplies for paint thinning, including Universal Medium, Thin Painting Medium, and Liquefying Medium.
Varnishes
Once you’ve finished your painting, you need to protect it against all kinds of damage! The right Atelier varnish will depend on the finish you wish to achieve. Atelier Gloss Varnish will dry to a clear and glossy finish, while Matte Varnish is specifically formulated to reduce gloss levels without reducing colour intensity. Satin Varnish, on the other hand, will leave you with a semi-gloss, satin sheen.
