Synthetic vs Natural Hair Paintbrushes: What’s the Difference?

Paintbrushes can be made from a variety of different materials, some natural and some synthetic. While synthetic paintbrushes are typically made from nylon, polyester, or a combination of the two, natural hair paintbrushes, as the name would suggest, are made from real animal hair, such as squirrel, sable, and even hog bristles.

The type of paintbrush you buy can really change the look of your work, so let’s explore the differences.

Synthetic Paintbrushes

Usually less expensive than a natural hair paintbrush, synthetic paintbrushes are a great starting point for painting beginners, though they’re still popular amongst professionals.

Here are some of the properties you can expect from a synthetic paintbrush:

  • Made from nylon or polyester (animal-friendly)
  • Lower cost
  • Well suited to acrylic, oil, and watercolour paints
  • Easy to use
  • Minimal maintenance required
  • Smooth finish
  • Tends to hold and release more paint
  • High heat or harsh solvents can damage the synthetic fibres

Natural Hair Paintbrushes

Natural hair makes for a beautiful and luxurious paintbrush. But as they can be a little harder to handle and maintain, we typically recommend them for professionals.

Here are some of the properties that make natural hair paintbrushes unique:

  • Made from real animal hair
  • More expensive
  • Perfect for oil paint which condition the bristles or hairs, making them extra pliable
  • Natural hair requires a little extra maintenance to preserve the quality
  • Soaks up water, making them ideal for watercolour
  • Often incompatible with acrylic paints which can damage the hair
  • Tends to leave clear brushstrokes (great for textured and painterly effects)

What Types of Hair are Natural Paintbrushes Made From?

Natural hair paintbrushes are made from a range of different types of animal hair. Popular materials include:

  • Squirrel Hair Paintbrushes: A great alternative to sable brushes, squirrel hair paintbrushes are particularly suited to thinner paints, including watercolour, tempera, thinned acrylic, and ink.
  • Ox Hair Paintbrushes: Holding large amounts of colour and excellent for moving large quantities of paint across a canvas, ox hair paintbrushes are perfect for thicker media such as oil paint.
  • Hog Bristle Paintbrushes: Known for their versatility and durability, hog bristle paintbrushes are made from the stiff bristles of a hog. Holding a lot of paint for greater coverage, these brushes are suitable for a range of different media, including acrylic, oil, and gouache.
  • Kolinsky Sable Paintbrushes: Made from the dense and luxurious hair of the Siberian Kolinsky, which is a species of weasel rather than a sable, Kolinsky sable paintbrushes are an excellent choice for fine detail work, and are often used in watercolour, acrylic, and oil painting.

What Are the Different Types of Paintbrushes?

Brush materials aren’t the only way that paintbrushes vary. They also come in a number of different shapes which can alter the way paint is applied to your canvas. Each type of paintbrush can create different textures and effects.

Here are some of the most common types of paintbrush, and some general recommendations for how to use them:

  • Pointed Round: Narrower than a regular round brush, pointed round brushes are particularly suited to fine details, delicate linework, and line variation.
  • Flat: With a broad, flattened shape, flat brushes are best used for washes, bold strokes, impasto work, and filling in large spaces.
  • Bright: Bright paintbrushes are shorter than flat brushes, with an almost toe-shaped taper. These brushes are ideal for short, controlled strokes, and thick colour application.
  • Filbert/Cat’s Tongue: The flat, oval shape of the Filbert brush is great for blending and creating soft, rounded edges.
  • Fan: The fan shape of this brush makes it ideal for feathering, textures, and creating details such as leaves and clouds.
  • Angular flat: The wedge shape of the angular flat brush is perfect for filling corners and smaller areas, while also offering similar coverage to a regular flat brush.
  • Wide: Ideal for filling in large areas or painting outdoor surfaces.
  • Detail round: Short, narrow, and with a pointed tip, the detail round brush is the perfect choice for short strokes and detail work.

You’ll likely need to use a number of different paintbrushes in your work, so we recommend purchasing a paintbrush set to give you all the basic brushes you need to get started.

What’s the Best Way to Clean and Store Paintbrushes?

To preserve the fibres of your paintbrushes, you’ll need to clean and store them correctly.

It’s best to clean your brushes using water or solvents (depending on the paint) immediately after use so that the bristles don’t become stiff with dried paint.

Transporting your brushes also comes with the danger of damage and bristle loss. A paintbrush wallet is a great way of storing your brushes, though you’ll still need to take care to protect the hair or synthetic fibres so they don’t get damaged in-transit.

We recommend purchasing a set of brush guards to preserve your brushes, ready for future use.
