What is Scrapbooking?

A fun and creative method of preserving precious memories, scrapbooking is the art of taking blank books and adding photos, memorabilia, journal entries, and other embellishments. Scrapbooking is a popular option for documenting your life in a way that suits your personal style, while allowing you to exercise your creativity.

What is Art Journaling?

While scrapbooking focuses on preserving memories, memorabilia, and photos in a creative way, art journaling is more focused on creating a visual journal using your artistic skills and techniques. This means that an art journal not only documents your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, it can also document your artistic progress as your skills visibly increase throughout your journal.

The lines between a scrapbook and an art journal can become quite blurred, but thankfully, there’s no rules about what you can and can’t do. It’s all about personal expression!

What Do You Need to Start Scrapbooking or Art Journaling?

Both scrapbooking and art journaling are very personal activities, so how you do it and what you use is very much up to your own needs and preferences. Both scrapbooking and art journaling tend to be mixed media activities, so you can play and experiment with different media as much as you like!

Here’s a list of some of our most popular art journal and scrapbooking supplies:

This is all about your personal journey and development, so the sky really is the limit when it comes to art journal and scrapbooking supplies.

How to Make a Scrapbook or Art Journal

There are a wide variety of techniques you can use in making your scrapbook or art journal, and what you choose to do will determine what scrapbooking supplies you’ll need to purchase. Here are some of the most popular techniques used by beginners and experienced scrapbookers alike.

Stencilling

Stencilling is the technique of reproducing designs onto a surface by passing ink or paint over holes cut into cardboard, plastic, metal, or other materials. This can be a great option for people who may not necessarily be interested in free-hand painting or drawing.

Dina Wakley offers a range of gorgeous stencils to get you started.

Collage

Collages are created by assembling various materials, including fabric and decorated tissue paper in order to create new imagery. Collage is also a popular option for displaying photos or meaningful pictures as a single, cohesive piece.

Writing

Both art journaling and scrapbooking are about your personal journey, and sometimes words are the only way to get the message across. Whether you’re using a stencil, cutting out meaningful phrases, or simply scrawling across the page, your words can become as much a part of your creative process as all the visual components of your work.

Painting

If you’re skilled with a brush (or looking to learn), paint is a versatile and fun medium to use in your scrapbook or art journal. Please note that standard paper books may not take paint well. However, Dina Wakley’s Media Journals are specifically designed for acrylic paint, mediums, gesso, and more!

If you’re working with watercolour, you may want to try a watercolour journal, or individual pieces of watercolour paper, which you can then insert into your journal or scrapbook.

What is Stamping?

Stamping (also called ‘Rubber Stamping’) is a craft involving ink applied to an image or pattern that’s been carved, moulded, or engraved onto a surface, and then pressed onto another surface, often paper.

Stamping is a visually striking method of mark-making that’s popular with creatives of all skill levels, from children all the way up to professional artists. That’s because it’s a relatively simple technique to master. In fact, with the right ink and materials, you can get professional-quality effects with very little effort or preparation.

Hand stamping is popular with scrapbooking, invitations, greeting cards, and product tags.

What is a Cling Stamp?

Often made from transparent photopolymer or acrylic, cling stamps work very much the same way as a regular stamp, except they feature a sticky back which can be stuck to a clear, acrylic stamping block. This allows you to stick the stamp at any angle you like, while the clear stamping block lets you see exactly where you’re pressing down for precise stamping and layering.

Many stamping blocks feature a convenient grid to help with the placement and alignment of your stamp.
