Texture and Viscosity

Known for their smooth and buttery consistency, Golden Paints Heavy Body Acrylics boast the unique ability to ‘stand up’, retaining brush strokes and palette knife marks on the canvas. This means that when you’re working with this paint, you’re not just working with colour, you’re working with texture too!

Another unusual property of the Heavy Body range is that as you stir it, the paint will begin to lose viscosity and will start feeling much thinner. The faster you move the paint, the thinner it’ll feel. But when left in a state of rest, the paint will again be returned to its regular viscosity. This makes Heavy Body Acrylics easier to work with, as it won’t feel as though you’re painting with ‘sludge’.

Colours

Mixing gels in, for example, may increase the body and enhance peaks in your work. This is something you might want to play with when experimenting with impasto techniques.

As an acrylic paint, you can also mix Heavy Body Acrylic with water in order to thin out the paints for use in your underpainting. Please note that water tends to ‘flatten out’ paint and can impact its binding capabilities.

Can You Mix Heavy Body Acrylics with Other Paints?

There’s usually no problem mixing different paint lines. In fact, by experimenting with different lines, you may be able to achieve results that you could never have achieved using just a single type of paint.

It’s important to remember when mixing two paint lines that the resulting mixture will be a combination of the characteristics of each brand. For example, mixing a heavy body paint with a fluid paint would result in a paint with a consistency that’s somewhere between the two.

In some rare instances, the chemical composition of different brands of acrylic paint may interact with one another, potentially resulting in a lumpy or unusual texture. It’s best to test a small amount of paint before mixing too much to prevent wastage of incompatible paints.
