High flow acrylics have the same intensity and opacity of regular acrylics but are a much thinner consistency, like milk. Unlike adding water to acrylic paint and making them translucent, fluid acrylics retain their vivid colour and can be poured, dripped, swirled, sprayed and splashed onto surfaces such as paper and canvas to create striking abstract patterns.
To increase their flow, an acrylic medium or extender can also be poured onto a canvas with the paints layered on top and swirled with tools or tilted for a gorgeous, dramatic effect. They can also be used with many other mediums, such as acrylic paint, inks, gouache, oil paints and pastels for an interesting mixed media project.

When using fluid acrylics, there's a number of tried and tested techniques that will give you a great starting point for experimenting and creating your own unique look. High flow acrylics are fantastically unpredictable which makes them great for abstract patterns and designs. Try these popular methods to get started:
1. Dirty Pour - This is the most popular technique in fluid painting. Combine two or more colours in a cup and pour onto a surface for a marbling effect.
2. Flip Cup - Layer different colours of paint into a cup, then flip the cup onto a surface and leave sitting for 30 seconds. Lift off and tilt the surface to make the colours run and swirl.
3. Ribbon - Use the leftover paint from a flip cup to pour onto a canvas in ribbons, then tip canvas slightly in different directions for a striking galaxy look.
4. Bloom Effect - Paint a base layer. Hold a colander or strainer over the canvas and pour paint into it, layering as many colours as you want. Rotate it 180 degrees and tilt the canvas to create flower-like blooms.
5. Swipe - Choose a few colours and pour down in clean lines. Choose a thicker swipe colour, usually black or white, and layer on top. Use a palette knife or Art Studio contouring tool to swipe across surface.
6. Combining Techniques - Try experimenting by combining two or more of these techniques for a truly unusual result!

High flow acrylic paints have a thin, runny consistency that's similar to acrylic inks, such as our Liquitex acrylic ink range. As a result, they can be applied to surfaces using many different applicators to create different techniques.
They can be loaded onto a wide paintbrush and used for washes and broad strokes. You can also make fine lines by dipping a liner brush into the paint and using it for intricate details. Fluid acrylics are also good with air brushes for spraying, filling empty markers and using with dip pens for calligraphy.
Unlike watercolour paint, high flow acrylics are waterproof. This means once they're dry, you won't be able to rework them with water as you can with traditional watercolours. While you can achieve a thin, washed effect that mimics a watercolour painting, these paints set quickly, are permanent and will be much brighter and more opaque.

You can make your own high flow acrylic paint by adding water, extender or an acrylic medium, to regular acrylic paint. This will break down the binder and thin the paints, making it easier for them to pour and flow over a surface. If you want to skip right to painting, we sell a fantastic range of Holcroft fluid acrylics, along with paintbrushes, canvases and accessories to get you started!
High flow acrylic paints come ready to use right out of the tube so there's no need to add anything else to them if you don't want to. The runny consistency of the paint makes it perfect for dripping, pouring and blending over canvas, wood and other surfaces. However, you can also add an acrylic medium to thin the paints further.
High flow acrylics are fun and extremely versatile. They can be used direct or combined with other mediums, such as acrylic paint, acrylic inks, pens, markers, oils and more, for a striking mixed media project. Consider these applications:
1. Hand pour paint directly onto a surface. Blend, tilt and rotate to get patterns.
2. Load them into dip pens and markers for fine lines
3. Use them in an air brush for spraying
4. Add to other paints, mediums and gels for a coloured tint and marbling effect
You can use high flow acrylics to create an unlimited amount of creative, fluid art masterpieces on a range of different surfaces, including canvas, wood, art boards, thick paper and more. Try using fluid acrylics with these techniques:
1. Dripping
2. Dirty pouring
3. Using a strainer for a bloom effect
4. Ribbon pouring
5. Flip cup method
6. Marbling
7. Spraying
8. Dry brushing
9. Thinning paint further for a wash similar to watercolours
