Different Types Of Paint For Art
Each type of paint is best suited to a specific type of project.
Traditional Painting - Try your hand at traditional painting using our canvases and drawing pads by Eraldo and The Art Studio. Acrylics and oils work brilliantly on canvas and paper with rich pigments and can be applied using paintbrushes, palette knives, sponges or your finger. Use our watercolour pads to explore watercolour painting and gouache. These art paints create beautiful, vibrant washes and layers that can be reworked using water if you make a mistake.
Fabric Painting - Revamp your home and wardrobe by using our range of fabric paints and dyes to breathe new life into old t-shirts, cushions, blankets, bags and more. Fabric paint is non-toxic, fade-proof and able to be washed many times without coming out.
Ink Painting - Ink painting uses thin inks and dyes to create gorgeous abstract designs and effects that are fluid and strikingly bright. Our alcohol inks by Jacquard will allow you to paint on a range of surfaces, including yupo paper, ceramic, metal, glass and canvas, for a truly unique work of art.

Different Styles And Techniques And Accessories Required
Whether you're painting with oils, acrylics, watercolours, gouache or something else, there are a few tried and true methods to getting the finish you want. They can be used to add texture, cover large areas and to add detail to any work. Here are some of the most popular techniques to use in painting and the accessories you'll need to do them:
Underpainting - When using acrylic paint and oil paint, use a wide flat brush to paint an undercoat layer in burnt umber or phthalo blue to create shadows. Build up layers from thin to thick.
Blocking - Use flat or round brushes for filling in areas. A large flat brush can be used to fill in the canvas with broad strokes while a filbert brush can be used to block in shapes.
Dry Brushing - Add a small bit of paint to brush, wipe it off, and apply to canvas for dry strokes that resemble grass and rocks.
Glazing - Use a flat brush to apply a transparent wash over a painting to enhance shadows and give it an interesting tint.
Oil painting is a timeless art and one that's cherished by beginners and professionals alike. Oil paints are praised for their rich pigment and slow drying time which allows for extreme flexibility in achieving the right texture and finish. We've got oil paints in dramatic shades, oil paint sets and oil pastels by Sennelier for brilliantly blended masterpieces.
Acrylic paint is perfect for beginners and professionals. It's fast-drying, vibrant, water-soluble and can be used on nearly anything, from canvases and paper to plastic, wood, fabric and glass.
We have a stunning range of acrylic paints by leading brands like Atelier, Jo Sonja, Art Culture and Eraldo. Unlike student paints, such as Chromacryl, which are typically less pigmented, our art paints have an intense pigment that won't fade over time.
There's many acrylic colours to choose from, including raw sienna, cobalt blue, warm red, yellow oxide and titanium white for highlights and lightening colours. We've also got cotton canvases that are triple primed with gesso to provide the perfect surface for acrylic paints and varnish for sealing your finished work and giving it a matte of gloss finish.
Gouache is a fascinating medium that's halfway between watercolours and acrylics. It can be watered down for a light wash, layered or laid on thick and has the same vivid colour of acrylics with a glossier finish. Gouache is excellent on our Eraldo watercolour pads as it shows up bright and bold and can be thinned with water and blended as needed.
Painting with watercolours will give you a fluid work of art that's transparent and beautifully coloured. It's easy to clean up and can be applied to watercolour paper with paint brushes using a variety of techniques, including washes, gradients, blooms and dry brushing.
